Introduction | Uses of Barytes | Benefits of Barytes | Barytes Statistics

World production is broadly linked to oil-well drilling activity and has increased from 6.0- 6.5Mtpa in the early 2000s to 9.7Mt in 2014 - but fell to 8Mt in 2015 and to 7.3Mt in 2016 as a result of low oil prices and reduced drilling activity – but recovered to a preliminary estimate of 8.7Mt in 2017.  China accounted for some 42% with India, Morocco, USA, Mexico, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan and Thailand accounting for around 50%. The USA was the largest consumer at around 2.6 million tpa in 2017 - China  used  1.6Mt and the Middle East 1.4Mt.

Europe consumption (including Norway and Turkey) is around 0.65 million tpa of which 72% is sourced domestically. Some 70% of the production is into added-value markets so a significant proportion is an export earner, and a higher proportion of the oil-well industry requirement imported. Germany, Bulgaria and UK account for over 90% of the EU-27 output.
